Running on Fumes

There have been many times I’ve said this very thing this year with so much going on. After visiting our project today, I can say I feel it. Walking into our home today smells like a can of turpentine. Between the new cellar concrete stain and the hardwood stain, 10 minutes will get you high as a kite. ( it doesn’t seem to phase our guys!) We wanted an old world look for the cellar.  So we opted with a dark acid wash satin on the walls and floor. The blank will is where we’ll install the riddling rack. This room is going to be amazing when it is complete!  It is a bit of a challenge to stain new pine to match the historic heart pine. Our builder has a stain mixologist that studied wood in college and stain. He came up with a six-step process to match our stain. We left our Halloween candy for the guys because they are working all weekend. The stain is coming together...

The three T’s

Today is about trim, tile and trees. The carpenters were installing the trim. New door casings are going in. The kitchen beams are boxed in. And the transoms we decided to put in above the powder room and pantry are in. We put these in for extra light and so we could reuse our old doors. The old heart pine was laid on the stairwell going to the third floor, and the doors were trimmed out with our old door casings. I love how there is now a little bit of old in with the new. The tile team was also doing their thing. Here’s the laundry room floor. They had to cut the master bath subway tile on site. I love how this is coming together. And I still can’t believe that this is going to be our bathroom! And last but definitely not least, our neighbors had to take down one of the old oak trees. I talk about it here. I will miss this beautiful tree. By the end of the week we will...

My blue world is really a happy place

Blue.  It is my favorite color.  I love so many hues from peacock, to aqua to baby blue to robin’s egg.  Give me shades of blues and greens and I’m one happy camper.  It’s probably not a coincidence that my sign is Cancer – a water sign. My other hero during this renovation (outside of Jonathan) is my friend, and designer, Scott Laslie. Scott and I have traveled in many of the same circles for years in Atlanta.  When we started this project, I reached out to him to help with our interiors. I now know why he has earned such a great reputation. In addition to having impeccable taste, he listens and delivers.  Scott has since moved to Chicago and without even seeing our home, he came back with an incredible design after a few phone conversations and fabric samples. I am so excited about the way this is going to turn out! (Please ignore my dirty porch staging area)...

Cabinets and Faucets and Finishes, Oh My!

Over the past couple of weeks, we have spent some time working to get the finishes complete.  We’ve had a few scheduling conflicts so it’s great that Jonathan and I are on the exact same page.   We trust each other’s taste completely when it comes to selecting finishes. First stop was the cabinet manufacturer.  Sadly Jonathan got stuck in FL so I ventured up to Dalton (practically Tennessee) by myself.  It’s been a while since I’ve had a nice, long drive and it was a nice break from the zip and go driving routine I have around town.  This was not really difficult as the cabinetry was beautiful.   Solid wood across the board – no melamine boxes here! I really love the bottom detail of the cabinetry. The style we wanted is simple, classic and straightforward. These kitchen cabinets will be painted white.  We’ll use reproduction antique cast iron...
