A hole in my heart

Today we said goodbye to our beloved pet, Sage. I’ve had Sage since the late 90’s and he was about 19 years old. He was my exes cat and we bonded so hard that I kept him when we split up. I’ve owned 5 cats in my adult life and Sage was the most dog-like of all of them. He crawled under the covers to snuggle, constantly begged for food, and had a short meow that is like a cat bark when he wanted to get your attention or say hi.

Late this week I knew something was up. On Thursday we noticed his belly bloated. Then on Friday he didn’t want to eat – a first for him. Then Friday in the middle of the night he crawled in bed with us and I just knew it was happening. I have dreaded this day for so long. I knew it was coming because he’s aged so much this year and had become so frail.

We told Addison what was happening and I was able to find a wonderful hospice vet that came to our home. Lap of Love and Dr. Lauren were so comforting during this time.

Addison bought him a special pink blanket and we spent the day with him loving and and caressing him. Skoop – his brother from another mother – cuddled with him.

When I shot this video on Monday we were making fun of our temporary digs and I caught Jonathan feeding Sage for the nth time during the day. Sage was his typical hungry self. Despite this place being so hard to live in – it’s been great for the cats as we are always together which has comforted them.  And the lack of stairs was good for Sage.

I’ve been so worried about how he was going to make the transition back to the house with the stairs. It’s funny how animals know these things. Sage knew it was his time. It’s so hard to say goodbye to a furry family member. I am so sad and have a huge a hole in my heart. And while I am sad – I’m filled with love and thankfulness that we have been able to say a proper goodbye.

RIP Sage.  You’ve left an indelible mark on our family and we will hold a special place for you in our hearts forever.
