It’s our 6-month Anniversary!

We’re already at the six month mark. This was us 6 months ago. We were exhausted. But we were back home. Fast forward 6 months. It has been a whirlwind. And so much has happened. We finished another renovation. Opened two new businesses. I had back surgery. And we are still standing. We love our home. There is nothing we would change. We have enjoyed many days and nights on our back porch. (The swing bed is divine!) We have our own little vacation –  right in our own home. From waking up in the most comfortable bedroom, to bathing in a light-soaked bathroom, to getting ready in a great dressing room – all while listening to music pour through the house – it is fabulous. I’ll fill you in on what’s happened since we’ve moved in. From Thanksgiving to 1/1/15 we had SIX major parties. Thanksgiving, tour of homes, street Christmas party, Christmas,...

Can I get a Capital “P” for Progress!

Wow – the transformation of the last week has been amazing. Like “take my breath away” amazing. The haint blue ceilings I have swooned over for years are finally here – and ours. And we get them on two porches! Do we really get to live here? (This is what I keep asking myself…) The cabinets were delivered on Tuesday and the crew have been busy installing all week. To say that we are excited is the understatement of the year. Enough bitching about our current digs – the light is shining bright at the end of the tunnel. (That is a little smile coming from Jonathan’s face!) The old doors have been installed in the pantry and powder room. I really love the view of the new powder room tile through the transom window. It’s fun to have a modern surprise of 1/2″ penny tile covering the entire sink wall. And – next up for this powder...

The dumbwaiter is IN

The dumbwaiter was really Jonathan’s idea. And a great one at that. It’s going to be nice to not have to lug big things up and down the stairs! This handy device will go to all four floors. Here’s the top floor bonus room. Second floor laundry room. First floor utility room. Lower level wine cellar. Our rules are simple – operated by adults only and no living things shall be allowed inside. (Do ya hear that,...

My blue world is really a happy place

Blue.  It is my favorite color.  I love so many hues from peacock, to aqua to baby blue to robin’s egg.  Give me shades of blues and greens and I’m one happy camper.  It’s probably not a coincidence that my sign is Cancer – a water sign. My other hero during this renovation (outside of Jonathan) is my friend, and designer, Scott Laslie. Scott and I have traveled in many of the same circles for years in Atlanta.  When we started this project, I reached out to him to help with our interiors. I now know why he has earned such a great reputation. In addition to having impeccable taste, he listens and delivers.  Scott has since moved to Chicago and without even seeing our home, he came back with an incredible design after a few phone conversations and fabric samples. I am so excited about the way this is going to turn out! (Please ignore my dirty porch staging area)...

A dumbwaiter – it’s really smart!

Just like I have had some non-negotiables in this renovation, so has Jonathan. The wine cellar was one and the dumbwaiter was one the other. I have to give it to my hubby, he researches and researches and researches until he finds the answer.  And boy am I glad he does this as he has found all sorts of smart solutions. I think this will be such a welcome addition to our soon-to-be 4 story home. This particular dumbwaiter will fit two of our largest pieces of luggage.  So there are no more excuses for leaving them on the first floor after a trip. And, if we ever need it, we can install a little, capsule elevator in the same space. How sci-fi is that?! (Let’s hope if this ever had to happen it could be well-hidden as this look will NOT pass Scott’s taste test.) So there you go – a dumbwaiter is actually a SMART-waiter! This is going to be one, useful feature.  (and...

Beam me up, Scottie!

Beam.  It’s been our four letter word this week. We have big beams.  And while in many cases bigger is better, that’s not so much the case here.  In order to support the load – coupled with a large and open space – we needed these massive supports.  What we didn’t really figure in was how darn massive they were going to be. We’ve gone round and round with our team on how to handle these. Once again, Jonathan came to the rescue (with a little help from our friends). After lots of talking about different scenarios with Ryan (builder), Scott (designer) and Steve (draftsman) we needed a little time for Jonathan’s creative juices to percolate on it all. Our compromise is to drop the ceiling a few inches to make them 8″ square.  Then we will add others distributed evenly to give it balance, and follow our original design inspiration. So now we...
