François has a Green Card!

We’ve been sweating bullets since last Wednesday. While we were excited that our beloved François came home – he had to sit on our back porch for the last seven nights. (I’m kind of surprised that Jonathan didn’t camp out with him.) While it would have taken a pretty brazen (and strong) thief – we are happy he is home where he belongs. What a beauty. Appliance porn that will be making food porn. Tomorrow he gets all dressed up with subway tile.  (Jonathan thinks François needs to be a lady – so thankfully it’s a unisex name.) We’ve got some American traditions to teach (Thanksgiving and Christmas) so he (or she) will be jumping right into citizenship. Meanwhile, while we were sweating bullets – Addison didn’t have a care in the world on Bill and Ellie’s swing…  Ahh, the joys of being...

The Kitchen

I love Mario Batali – and he says it perfectly here: “The kitchen really is the castle itself. This is where we spend our happiest moments and where we find the joy of  being a family.” I’d say that the kitchen was our single biggest motivator for this renovation. Here’s how this week went down. The refrigerator was delivered. This thing weighs 1000 lbs. Getting it in was no joke. Because our oven is so large and has some serious fumes to manage, we had to get a custom range hood with two motors. While it’s a powerhouse, it still looks lovely. The wet bar was installed. And has an assortment of features I’m very excited about! A valet for our coffee maker. And an ice maker. No more running out of ice!! The walnut island countertop came in yesterday. It is like a table in the middle of our kitchen. Watching our dream turn into reality is really...

François is here

Our special treat arrived from France this week. We had to get four guys to handle it.  This oven was one really special treat that we gave ourselves. It’s six feet and over 600 pounds! It will be the star of our kitchen. I have named him François. Addison has named him Black Beauty. Either name – we are happy he is here and we are ready to break this puppy in! Come on Chez...

A fresh coat of paint and stain

These two things go a LONG way. I was able to get a glimpse of the floors before they were covered up. We went a little darker and I’m really pleased with the color. The stain is Provencial. Ryan our awesome builder was able to source vintage heart pine and our “new” old floors look incredible! The Brazilian ipe we used on the back porch is amazing. This is not stained and is just sealed. What beautiful, natural colors this wood has. It’s also the hardest wood so we chose it for these properties for our back porch. They installed the ceiling fans – which will come in very handy on our Hotlanta days. And hung the screen doors (which we will seal and stain in a natural, wood color.) The rear deck was completed (and will be stained to match the screened doors.) The painters came this week and have been busy. Here’s the 3rd floor bonus room. We repainted...

A little Glimpse

It’s been another good week. Here’s a little glimpse of what’s been going on. The back porch screens were installed. We chose something that is very clear to keep it light and bright. Very pleased with this. (I just hope birds do not get curious and decide that they need to come and visit.) The back deck ceiling was completed. And our some of our fixtures went in. I love this versatile faucet and the insta-hot. (Thank you Scott for that recommendation.)  The powder room faucet was installed. I like this much better than what I had originally thought of. Jonathan and I finally get to share a master bathroom with lots of room for each of us. And Addison approves of our tub. It’s always nice to have your 8-year-old’s approval. (At least she is not in charge of her room just yet!) Here’s a feature that is more function over form – and that I am...

Tick Tock

We are really counting down the days now. As it stands at the moment, we’ll be back in our home in less than a month. Here’s a recap of the last two weeks. When they took up the boards on the front porch everything was rotten underneath. So they rebuilt it. Now we have a beautiful (and structurally sound) front porch! The exterior cellar stairs have been installed. The framing crew built the chases in the kitchen. Farmhouse sink is in. And then the countertops came. Slowly but surely it’s coming together. The vintage tub and sink came back looking sparkly and new. In order to accommodate the tub, the flooring refinishers came and did the hall bath. We got a sneak peak of what our newly refinished floors will look like. We love them! Then the bath fixtures went in. And the old sink was installed in the powder room. This made me really, really happy! The trim guys were...
