The space is taking shape

The space is starting to take shape. For the first time, we have been able to walk in the rooms and feel what the space is starting to become. Yup – we’re pretty excited. And check out these views!  I can just imagine taking a nice, long bath looking out at the trees.  It’s going to be heavenly! Thankfully we missed the predicted horrible weather.  Our framers will be back at it this week and pretty soon we’ll have the house boxed up. Our Rhododendron and Iris are peeking out and saying hi. Stay tuned – every day it’s looking more and more like a...

Cha-cha-cha-changes

I knew that this was going to be hard.  That still didn’t prepare me.  This stuff is really, really hard and at times mentally and emotionally draining. I’m very thankful that we have a great marriage! Renovating your home is not for the faint of heart – that’s for sure.  Every time I get nutted up, Jonathan is there to calm me down.  And when he has been nutted up, I have been the calming one.  I am SO VERY THANKFUL for this. I’m also thankful that we have a great relationship with our builder.  Ryan was a friend first and foremost.  And we have had an open line of communication all along.  Inevitably things come up, and being able to address them and talk through them has been comforting. In order to accommodate a 25′ open span space, these massive support beams had to be installed.  These are way larger than the cute little beams that we had...

Framing – Day 2

Things are moving real fast. They took out the wall between the kitchen and dining room as it was not in good shape. This will be the only time we have a truly “open plan” home. Now that the floor has been laid, it’s the first time we’ve been able to walk out to what will be the kitchen and screened porch. We are excited.  The next few days are going to be big changes! Oh and honey, you need to cut the grass so it doesn’t look like we live in a...

Cabinets and Faucets and Finishes, Oh My!

By on Apr 22, 2014 in Renovation | 0 comments

Over the past couple of weeks, we have spent some time working to get the finishes complete.  We’ve had a few scheduling conflicts so it’s great that Jonathan and I are on the exact same page.   We trust each other’s taste completely when it comes to selecting finishes. First stop was the cabinet manufacturer.  Sadly Jonathan got stuck in FL so I ventured up to Dalton (practically Tennessee) by myself.  It’s been a while since I’ve had a nice, long drive and it was a nice break from the zip and go driving routine I have around town.  This was not really difficult as the cabinetry was beautiful.   Solid wood across the board – no melamine boxes here! I really love the bottom detail of the cabinetry. The style we wanted is simple, classic and straightforward. These kitchen cabinets will be painted white.  We’ll use reproduction antique cast iron...
